Pool Plastering in Paso Robles, CA
Most pool companies in this area subcontract their plaster work. That means when your pool gets to the most important step, a crew that doesn't work for that company shows up to finish it. Pool Tek is different. We have our own in house plaster crew, James Ratliff is a trusted member of the National Plasterers Council, and Pool Tek is an NPT Approved Applicator. They work directly for us, answer to James, and are held to the same standard on every single job. If you want your pool plastered right, that distinction matters.
Why an In House Plaster Crew Makes a Difference
When a pool company uses a subcontractor for plaster, they hand your job off to a crew they don't manage day to day. That crew has their own schedule, their own workload, and their own standards. If something isn't right, there's a gap between who did the work and who's responsible for fixing it.
Pool Tek's plaster crew answers to James. They're not juggling jobs for three different companies. When they show up to your pool, this is the job. That means better prep work, better application, and someone accountable if anything needs to be addressed after the fact.
James has replastered pools across Paso Robles and the surrounding Central Coast. He knows what the water chemistry here does to different finishes over time and how to prep a surface properly so the new plaster bonds the way it should.
One Point of Contact, Start to Finish
You call James with questions before the job. You call James if something comes up after. There's no subcontractor in the middle to track down. That's C-53 Swimming Pool Contractor License #1007752 if you want to verify it.
Signs Your Pool Needs Replastering
The most obvious sign is how the surface feels underfoot. When plaster starts to go, it gets rough. It can scratch feet and snag swimsuits. That's not normal wear. That's a pool telling you it's time.
Staining is another indicator. Some staining comes from water chemistry and can be treated. But when the discoloration is in the plaster itself and won't respond to chemicals, the finish is done. The same goes for visible cracks, chips, or areas where the plaster has started to peel away from the shell.
A harder to balance water chemistry is one people often overlook. Old, degraded plaster leaches calcium into the water and makes it difficult to keep the pool balanced. If you're fighting your water chemistry and can't figure out why, the plaster is worth looking at. Paso Robles water is already on the harder side, which puts extra wear on plaster over time and makes proper prep work even more important.
Most plaster finishes last 10 to 15 years depending on how the pool has been maintained. If yours is in that range and showing any of these signs, it's time to call. And if the plaster is just one of several things that need attention, we handle full pool renovations too.
Pool Plaster Finishes We Offer
Choosing a finish is one of the bigger decisions in a replaster job. Pool Tek works with NPT — National Pool Tile — one of the most respected finish manufacturers in the industry. Here's what's available and what each one actually means for your pool.
Standard White Plaster
This is the classic finish and still one of the most common. It gives pools that clean, bright blue look. It's the most affordable option and holds up well when the pool is properly maintained. If you want a straightforward finish at a fair price, white plaster is a solid choice.
QuartzScapes
NPT's QuartzScapes line mixes crushed quartz aggregate into the plaster for a surface that's harder, smoother, and more resistant to staining than standard plaster. It holds its color better over time and stands up well to the mineral heavy water common in this area. Because Pool Tek is an NPT Approved Applicator, customers who choose QuartzScapes are eligible for the NPT Lifetime Limited Warranty rather than the standard 10 year warranty. That's a meaningful difference.
StoneScapes
StoneScapes is NPT's pebble finish line. Small smooth pebbles are mixed into the plaster for a textured surface that's extremely durable and comes in a wide range of colors. It's one of the longest lasting finishes available and looks great on pools with a natural or resort style aesthetic. Like QuartzScapes, the Lifetime Limited Warranty is available to Pool Tek customers through the NPT Approved Applicator program.
Colored Plaster
Colored plaster uses pigments mixed directly into the plaster to achieve a specific look. Darker colors create a deeper, more dramatic water color. It's a good option for homeowners who want something other than the standard blue and want to match the finish to a specific design vision.
See Your Options in Person at the NPT Showroom
Most homeowners pick a pool finish off a small color chip and hope it looks right in the water. Pool Tek gives our customers access to the NPT Design Center right here in Paso Robles at 3020 Propeller Dr. You can see the actual textures, hold the samples, and compare colors side by side before committing to anything. That matters when you're choosing a finish you'll look at every day for the next 15 years. James can walk you through the options there before the job ever starts.
How the Replastering Process Works
First the pool gets drained completely. The existing plaster surface is prepped — that means chipping away loose material, cleaning the shell, and making sure the surface is ready to bond with the new finish. This step matters more than most people realize. A bad prep job leads to a finish that doesn't hold.
Once the surface is ready, the new plaster is applied and finished by hand. After application, the pool goes through a startup process as it's refilled. Water chemistry is balanced carefully during this period because the first few weeks are critical to how the plaster cures and how long it lasts.
From start to finish, a replaster job typically takes a few days for the work itself plus time for the refill and startup. James will give you a clear timeline before anything starts so you know exactly when your pool will be back up and running.
What to Do After a Replaster
The startup period after a replaster is important. Water chemistry needs to be monitored closely in the first few weeks. We'll walk you through what to watch for so the new finish cures the way it should.
